PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has issued compounds to the organisers of events in Melaka attended by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and former prime minister Najib Razak.
In a statement today, the ministry said investigations by the state health department found that both the leaders had not attended any gathering related to the upcoming Melaka election but had, rather, held walkabouts.
The ministry fined the organisers for failing to ensure physical distancing at the events attended by both former prime ministers under Regulation 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (Measures within Infected Local Areas) (National Recovery Plan) Regulations 2021.
The ministry said PN was slapped with a RM20,000 fine while an individual who organised one of Najib’s events was fined RM4,000.
Previously, PKR was fined RM10,000 for holding a mobile and “crowdless” ceramah in Melaka.
Muda was slapped with a RM4,000 fine for holding a press conference to announce it would contest in the Melaka state election.
On Oct 24, the health ministry had issued a ban on political gatherings in the state from Oct 25 to Nov 27 over Covid-19 concerns. - FMT
