PN confirms Mas Ermieyati as its Malacca CM candidate

MALACCA POLLS | Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin today announced its Tanjung Bidara candidate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin as the coalition's chief ministerial candidate if they can win in the Malacca polls.

If Mas Ermieyati wins in Tanjung Bidara and PN can muster a majority, it would make her the first woman head of government in a state.

"This is the first time in history that a woman candidate who is qualified, professional, young, and experienced is being proposed for the position of chief minister," Muhyiddin told a press conference at the PN headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Parties contesting in the Malacca polls have been organising press events outside of the state to circumvent a strict ban on physical campaigning due to Covid-19.

The timing of the announcement appeared geared to help give PN a boost. Polling day (Nov 20) is only two days away.

BN announced incumbent chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali as its candidate to lead the state government even before campaigning officially began on Nov 8 while Harapan confirmed Amanah's Adly Zahari as their chief ministerial candidate on Nov 10.

At the press conference, Mas Ermieyati was seated beside Muhyiddin. Also present was PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Gerakan president Dominic Lau.

Mas Ermieyati is contesting in the Tanjung Bidara seat against Malacca Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh and Harapan's Zainal Hassan.

She is also the Masjid Tanah MP. Tanjung Bidara is one of five state seats within the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency.

In the last general election, BN won Tanjung Bidara with a 2,864-vote-majority. The seat is 94 percent Malay.

Malaccans will go to the polls on Nov 20 where they will elect 28 representatives to the state assembly.

The three major coalitions clashing in the Malacca polls - BN, PN, and Harapan - must win at least 15 seats for a simple majority to form the new government. - Mkini
