KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution in Lim Guan Eng’s undersea tunnel corruption case is seeking to admit the statement recorded from a late tycoon.
Deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat told sessions court judge Azura Alwi the prosecution will raise the matter of the late Ewe Swee Kheng’s statement at the next hearing on Nov 29.
Ewe’s statement was recorded by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers during the course of the investigation of the undersea tunnel case.
It was reported that the businessman died after he fell from his 16-storey luxury condominium unit in Penang on Oct 5 and landed in a swimming pool.
Although Penang police declined to disclose the deceased’s identity, citing “family sensitivity”, Ewein Bhd, a company founded by Ewe, announced that the tycoon had died that day.
The court was told today that Ewe’s death was due to “multiple injuries consistent with fall from high”.
MACC officer Syed Muhammad Fadzli Syed Hussin said the case’s investigating officer requested him to obtain a copy of Ewe’s death certificate from the National Registration Department (JPN) last month.
“He was supposed to be one of the witnesses,” Fadzil said.
In 2018, Ewe was arrested by MACC to assist in the investigations into claims of corruption in the RM6.13 billion Penang undersea tunnel project.
He had been scheduled to testify but had not been called yet. The prosecution said it intended to call 125 witnesses. - FMT
