Putrajaya unveils expert panel tasked with looking into Adib's death

Putrajaya has unveiled a panel of experts who will be tasked with looking into the 2018 death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

The line-up includes experts such as senior consultant forensic pathologist Dr JS Bhupinder Singh, criminologist MP Sundramoorthy, former appeals court judge Kamardin Hashim, and Universiti Malaya histopathologist Prof Dr Looi Lai Meng.

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin, Housing and Local Government Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican, and Attorney General Idrus Harun are also among the 10 appointed - in addition to two Bukit Aman senior officers SAC Azari Abd Rahman and SAC Mohammad Abd Hamid.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (Parliament and Law) will act as the committee's chairperson.

According to a statement released by Wan Junaidi today, the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department will act as the joint secretariat alongside the Home Affairs Ministry and Housing and Local Government Ministry for this special committee.

The committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the cabinet within six months from Oct 29 - the date this special committee was formed, said Wan Junaidi.

Adib died at the National Heart Institute on Dec 17, 2018, after succumbing to injuries sustained while on duty during riots near the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya, Selangor about a month prior.

In September 2020, coroner Rofiah Mohamad ruled that Adib's death was a criminal act perpetrated by two or three unidentified assailants during a riot outside the temple last November.

However, investigators have yet to be able to identify the alleged perpetrators.

On Oct 9, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob set up a committee to look into Adib's death. - Mkini
