Reveal truth about 1MDB funds and Zeti’s husband, says MP

Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said the truth should be revealed about 1MDB funds and the husband of a former central bank governor.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been asked to take action following revelations that some RM65 million in 1MDB-linked funds were held by the husband of former central bank chief Zeti Akthar Aziz.

In making the call in the Dewan Rakyat today, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) said it was important for the truth to be revealed.

“Does YB Tumpat agree that the MACC and other authorities should act as fast as possible because the whole country has been shaken by this news?” he asked Che Abdullah Mat Nawi of Perikatan Nasional, who had the floor.

Che Abdullah, speaking in the committee stage debate on the Supply Bill 2022, said he agreed with Azeez, and called on the relevant minister to provide an explanation.

Subang MP Wong Chen of PKR had previously called for investigations into Zeti, who was governor of Bank Negara from 2000 to 2016 and later a member of the government’s advisory Council of Eminent Persons.

MACC had said on Friday that it had managed to recover RM20.5 billion in assets and funds linked to 1MDB. The sum included the return of assets amounting to US$15.4 million (RM64.4 million) involving the accounts of Cutting Edge Industries Ltd, a company owned by Tawfiq Ayman and Samuel Goh.

Tawfiq is married to Zeti, who is a witness in the corruption trial of former prime minister Najib Razak on charges related to 1MDB.

Tawfiq had previously been questioned by police in connection with 1MDB funds. There has been no update on the investigation. - FMT
