PARLIAMENT | Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (Parliament and Law) has revealed that the cost for the upcoming Sarawak state election will be RM150 million.
He said the cost will include election equipment, ICT development, logistics, and election worker allowance.
“It will also include other needs including Covid-19 equipment and taking into account the election implementation in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines,” he said in a written parliamentary reply today.
Wan Junaidi was replying to Wong Ling Biu (Harapan-Sarikei) who asked the government to disclose the allocation amount set aside for the upcoming Sarawak poll.
Sarawakians are expected to head to the polls next month as the state legislative assembly was dissolved after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong lifted the localised emergency in the state.
This comes as Sarawak saw 416 new Covid cases yesterday, the fourth-highest in the country.
The state also recorded 13 Covid deaths yesterday, the second-highest after Kedah.
Critics have accused the ruling coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), of rushing the election to avoid the implementation of Undi18.
Once the voting age is lowered from 21 to 18, about 135,000 youths in the state are expected to be able to vote.
Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg defended his government's decision to appeal for the lifting of the emergency. The localised emergency was originally scheduled to end on Feb 2, 2022.
He said it would be a betrayal of the people’s mandate if his government stayed any longer. - Mkini
