Shahrir: Dissolving assembly not as simple as 'pressing button'

After a heated exchange in which former premier Muhyiddin Yassin called former minister Shahrir Samad foolish, the latter has responded by reminding Muhyiddin that dissolving Parliament or a state assembly is not a simple process.

Shahrir pointed out that the country has a Constitution and states have their own as well, which need to be followed.

"Furthermore, there is the monarch, the rulers and the heads of state who also have constitutional roles and responsibilities.

"Wanting to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat or state assembly is not as easy as 'pressing a button'," he said in a statement on Facebook today.

Shahrir was responding to Muhyiddin's explosive remarks on Friday when the Pagoh MP lambasted the veteran Umno leader and called him a "foolish" person for challenging Bersatu to withdraw its support for the Umno-led Johor state government.

Muhyiddin said the former Johor Bharu MP was being irresponsible for making such a challenge which can cause another snap state polls when the country is still struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic.

"His intent is evil. I know Shahrir, he wants what happened in Malacca to also happen in Johor," he added.

Muhyiddin went on to warn that if he was continually challenged, he could press a button and "everything would fall".

In a measured response, Shahrir repeated that such a dissolution would be subject to a process under the Constitution that involves the role of the head of state.

He also addressed Muhyiddin's complaint that the former premier's Bersatu-led government fell because Umno withdrew its support for Perikatan Nasional (PN).

"The question of 'it fell because Umno did not support' also has to do with the basic concept of our democratic practice, namely parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy," Shahrir said. - Mkini
