Splitting Malay vote: Umno the one refusing hand of friendship - Bersatu leader

Bersatu supreme council member Muhammad Faiz Na'aman said there should not be accusations against others for splitting the Malay vote when it is Umno that has refused Bersatu's repeated offers of friendship.

He also shot down attempts to whitewash the situation by some who said it would be a "friendly competition". He said those were nothing more than just words.

"It denies the reality that from the onset, there were no initiatives to negotiate by a certain group which has repeatedly dragged down its partner since late last year.

"Calls to make peace have been made by Bersatu repeatedly but yet Umno wants to go solo," Faiz (above) said in a statement.

He drew parallels to the 2005 film 'Kingdom of Heaven', which tells of Sultan Salahuddin's march to retake Jerusalem, but added that he wasn't making a direct comparison.

He highlighted a scene in the movie where Sultan Salahuddin, played by Syrian actor Ghassan Massoud, said he cannot show mercy during a siege of Jerusalem, controlled by the crusaders in 1187.

"There are those who saw it as Sultan Salahuddin being firm in his principles while others accused him of being stonehearted.

"Whatever people's views about Sultan Salahuddin's decision to lay siege on Jerusalem which included innocent people within the city, it stemmed from the arrogance of Guy De Lusignan who broke the peace between the Muslims and Christians," he said.

Guy of Lusignan became king of Jerusalem in 1186 and a year later broke the Muslim-Christian truce, prompting Sultan Salahuddin to march on Jerusalem.

"I do not want to directly compare it with the current political situation in the country particularly among Malays with different political platforms particularly on what is happening between Umno and Bersatu in the Malacca polls," Faiz added.

However, he said others should not be blamed for supposedly splitting the Malays.

"Don't accuse any quarters of supposedly splitting the Malay vote in national politics when the reality is that an elitist group that is egoistic, corrupt, and greedy are controlling the old parties in Malaysia.

"Bersatu cannot be soft anymore. We have our honour and principles of our struggle," he said.

Bersatu has sought to form a broad alliance under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner and has tried to bring Umno on board.

However, Umno has refused to join and will be contesting against PN under the BN banner during the Malacca polls.

PN comprises Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, Star, and SAPP while BN is made up of Umno, MCA, MIC, and PBRS. - Mkini
