Stubborn PH lost Melaka over MoU, says Warisan man

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s abysmal performance in last night’s Melaka polls was proof that the people were extremely unhappy with the opposition’s decision to sign an MoU with the government, a Warisan leader said.

Junz Wong, the party’s vice-president, said this was among the reasons for PH only managing to win five state seats yesterday. The opposition coalition won 15 seats in the last general election.

Wong said the people were also fed up with PH’s repeated broken promises and were yearning for a new leader.

He said Warisan had not only warned PH against signing the MoU, but also told them of the need to change its leadership.

However, PH did not listen and voters started to desert the party.

“Many in fact, voted unwillingly because they were forced to choose between two bad apples. And guess what, some rather choose MCA and MIC over PH,” he said.

Saying that what unfolded in Melaka was the result of PH’s “arrogance”, Wong added to calls for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to step aside as opposition leader.

He said Malaysians at large longed for a “new hope, a new direction” and not PH under Anwar. “If PH were to compete with Barisan Nasional in the next election, PH must change their leadership now.”

The MoU was signed between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan leaders, namely, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.

The MoU was signed with the aim of bringing about the political stability needed to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and revive the country’s economy.

Warisan president Shafie Apdal had then said that there was no reason for him to sign a similar MoU on behalf of Warisan. - FMT
