Chin Tong is new Johor opposition leader

The Johor Pakatan Harapan leadership has decided to appoint Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong as the new state opposition leader.

The decision followed a Harapan Johor leadership council meeting on April 8.

“Through the meeting, the Johor Harapan leadership agreed to appoint Liew (above) as the new Johor opposition leader. He won the Perling seat in the recent state election,” they said.

The announcement was made in a joint statement by Johor Harapan chief Aminolhuda Hassan, who is also the Johor Amanah chief, Johor PKR chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and Johor DAP deputy chief Teo Nie Ching.

The trio said they hope Liew can rally the opposition assemblypersons to play a constructive role in the state assembly.

They also hope the new BN-led Johor government will retain the reforms that were instituted by the previous Harapan-led state government.

“Among them is to recognise the position of the opposition leader, to set up more select committees, appoint an opposition representative as the state Public Accounts Committee chairperson and to provide equal allocation to all assemblypersons including the opposition,” he said.

They also reminded newly-minted Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi of the allocations promised by his predecessor Hasni Mohammad during Budget 2022.

In last month's Johor polls, BN won 40 out of the 56 seats in the state assembly.

Harapan picked up 12, with 10 coming from DAP, one from Amanah and one from PKR. Their ally Muda also won one.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional won three.
