RM50k wooden jetty in Miri: Netizens take JKR Sarawak to task

The Sarawak Works Department has come under public scrutiny after it uploaded several photographs showing the handing over of a new wooden jetty in Kampung Mutap, Miri, Sarawak, with a total cost of RM50,000.

According to the department’s Facebook post, project contractor Bukit Balat Company was given three months from March 6 to complete the 1m by 15m jetty.

The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and was handed over by an engineer from JKR Miri to the village chief on April 6.

“This jetty was built to replace the old damaged jetty that could no longer be used.

“A Dun N71 Bekenu RTP (Rural Transformation Project), New Build Jetty Kampung Mutap is a project overseen by JKR Miri with a total cost of RM50,000,” said the department.

“The project scope is for the construction of a 1m-wide by 15m-long jetty,” it added.

The post has gone viral since earlier today, with close to 3,000 shares and a majority of netizens had questioned the RM50,000 cost based on photographs of the bridge.

Many were sceptical over the quality of the final project, given it was completed in a short period of time.

Some pointed out that it should not have cost as much for a simple wooden structure comprising planks and support unless made out of high-grade timber used for high-end furniture.

Others argued that a jetty in the peninsula that cost RM50,000 would be made out of concrete, complete with handrails or other safety features.

There were also those who mocked supporters of the Sarawak GPS state government, claiming it was their reward after the last state election. - Mkini
