Lecturer who scolded student over laptop put on leave, says UiTM

UiTM says the decision to put the lecturer on leave was made to ensure that the university’s investigation can be carried out effectively.

PETALING JAYA: The lecturer who scolded a student for not having a computer has been put on leave pending the completion of internal investigations, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) announced today.

In a statement, UiTM said the decision was made by the university’s board of directors yesterday, with the lecturer, Roshana Takim, told to go on leave from today until the probe was completed.

“This decision was made to ensure that the university’s investigation can be carried out effectively,” it said.

UiTM also said it will not hesitate to take action against anyone found spreading any confidential information, whether intentionally or not, which can tarnish the university’s reputation.

“UiTM will not hesitate to lodge a report to the authorities if there are parties that share any misleading postings,” it said.

The university is believed to be referring to a three-page document that made its rounds on social media yesterday, which stated that UiTM had two courses of action over the controversy – terminating the lecturer’s contract or settling the issue amicably with the lecturer and the student involved.

Yesterday, a UiTM spokesman denied the authenticity of the “wrong document” which had gone viral.

Earlier this week, the lecturer drew brickbats from netizens after she was seen admonishing a student – whose face was not displayed on the screen – for using a smartphone for his online lesson.

When asked why he didn’t have a computer, the student replied that his father had no job and that his mother was “not around anymore”.

“If you have a sister and she has a gold bracelet, tell her to sell that and buy you a computer. You can’t learn properly when you have no computer,” the lecturer told the student.

“This is the fifth semester and you still don’t have a computer? A computer is very, very important. It’s just RM800, what’s your problem?” the lecturer told the online class that was in session. - FMT
