The Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor, which has served as the country's main Covid-19 treatment facility since 2020, is now open for non-Covid-19 patients.
This was announced by Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement issued today.
He said the Health Ministry made the decision following a drop in Covid-19 cases.
"Taking into account the current situation in Malaysia, particularly Covid-19 cases involving categories three, four and five as well as lower usage of health facilities in Klang Valley, the Health Ministry agreed that the suspended non-Covid treatment facilities in Sungai Buloh Hospital will be allowed to resume," he said.
"Therefore, the hospital will be converted into a hybrid hospital," he said.
"Sungai Buloh Hospital was gazetted as a Covid-19 hospital in March 2020 by the ministry to accommodate the need for hospital beds in Klang Valley during the pandemic.
"At the height of its operations, Sungai Buloh Hospital was able to accommodate over 2,000 patients at one time. As of yesterday, a total of 92,874 Covid-19 patients were treated at this hospital," he said.
Hybrid status means the hospital's emergency department will be open to all cases that come in, not just Covid cases.
It was reported earlier this year that the hospital was taking in non-Covid-19 cases on a selective basis at the hospital director's discretion. - Mkini
