Teacher allegedly punishes student over velcro shoes, cuts holy string

A student has lodged a police report over a punishment she received at school for wearing the wrong type of shoes, where she was allegedly told to kneel during a school assembly on Nov 1 in Tasek Gelugor, Penang.

The 13-year-old student alleged that a teacher instructed her to raise both arms while kneeling on a tarred road after she was found to be wearing shoes with velcro straps.

After the assembly, she claimed the teacher cut off her kayiru, a holy string she wore on her right wrist, and she was also ordered to remove her pottu (black dot) as well as the holy ash from her forehead.

“I was reprimanded by a teacher for wearing velcro shoes.

“I told the teacher that my father could not afford to buy me shoes with laces,” the student said in the police report sighted by Malaysiakini.

The student added that she was afraid to go to school after the incident, prompting her to lodge the report at Tasek Gelugor police station on Tuesday.

Tasek Gelugor police chief Radzi Ahmad confirmed receiving the report, according to Free Malaysia Today.
