Ex-Johor MB Hasni to contest Umno VP post

Former Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad has announced his candidacy for the Umno vice-presidential contest.

According to Bernama, the Simpang Renggam MP and former Johor menteri besar said he was offering himself for a vice-president post to help strengthen the party.

There are currently three Umno vice presidents: Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Mahdzir Khalid, and Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

“I’m offering myself as a candidate for the coming Umno vice-presidential contest. I believe many other leaders including incumbent Mohamed Khaled Nordin will defend or vie for the post.

“I want to contest in the spirit of continuing to contribute to the party at all levels,” he said.

Hasni (above) was speaking during a press conference after attending a special meeting of the Johor Umno Liaison Committee in Johor Bahru today.

He said that despite criticisms, the many candidates contesting for the vice president posts in the party elections prove that Umno remains relevant.

The crowded race should be seen as a positive sign for the party, he said, adding that this showed Umno leaders “do not abandon the party struggle.”

On Jan 27, Hasni was replaced by Kota Tinggi MP Mohamed Khaled Nordin as the Johor Umno chief to which the former claimed that he was “bullied” by the party’s leadership.

He said the bullying started during the Johor state election last March, alleging that he was seen as going against the party by supporting the idea of making the top two party posts open for contest.

Despite this, he took to social media today to congratulate Khaled, who is also running for a vice-president post, for becoming the chairperson of the Johor Umno liaison committee.

“Congratulations to Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who was newly appointed as the chairperson of the Johor Umno liaison committee, for officiating the special meeting of the committee this morning.

“God willing, with his vast experience and knowledge, I am confident that Khaled will be able to bring the committee to a better level,” he concluded. - Mkini
