Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin has described the action of an Umno leader asking party members to support DAP in the upcoming state elections as “unusual”.
The Pagoh MP said the request went against Umno’s principles and that it should be up to the members whether to respond to the call or not.
“(The call) is quite unusual. I used to be in Umno for almost 40 years and this is the first time I heard one of its leaders asking the members to support DAP.
“We (PN) did a study and found that in the last election, support transferability from Umno to DAP did not happen.
“What happened was that they (the voters) supported PN because Umno’s struggles are not the same as before,” Muhyiddin told reporters during a Pagoh Hari Raya Aidifiltri open house in Johor today.
He was referring to Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan who yesterday urged party members to support DAP candidates in their respective constituencies to strengthen the coalition government.
According to Harian Metro, Ahmad said since Umno was already part of the coalition government, its members must abide by party discipline.
Meanwhile, when Muhyiddin was asked if Ahmad acted out of desperation, the former said any action made by Umno’s leaders, especially by its president, has dragged the party to the end of its life.
“They (Umno) have said things that contradict their struggles and principles. I know because I used to be the party’s deputy president… and everything is not in line with its original struggles.
“The upcoming state elections will prove that the majority of Malays will no longer support Umno,” the Bersatu president added. - Mkini
