Veteran mountaineer T Ravichandran has successfully set a new record as the first Malaysian to conquer Mount Everest three times but was rushed to the hospital for frostbite in his subsequent attempt to take on Mount Lhotse.
Ravichandran (above) was part of the Himalaya Sport Everest-Lhotse Expedition 2023 and was aiming to conquer both mountains exceeding the height of 8,000m within 24 hours.
His wife Leela Ramamurthy said Ravichandran was airlifted to the hospital due to frostbite on his fingers when he was just 200m away from the summit of Mount Lhotse, the fourth highest peak in the world at 8,516m.
“However, he successfully managed to fly the Jalur Gemilang and the sponsor’s flag of Himalaya Sports on the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest at 8,848m on May 17, 12pm (Nepal time),” she was quoted as saying by Utusan today.
She hoped that fellow Malaysians would offer their prayers and support for her husband’s safe recovery.
Leela also conveyed her condolences to the family of Kedah Malaysian Civil Defence Force director Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub who died while on the Mount Everest climbing mission.
Ravichandran is expected to return to Malaysia tomorrow.
Malaysiakini previously interviewed Ravichandran on his ambitious attempt to conquer two of the highest peaks in the world within 24 hours.
“I am leaving all my fears behind and I am moving forward.
“Last year, I did Everest and Mount K2 within 72 days. This year I will try to finish faster,” he said.
Ravichandran had lost fingers during his first ascent of Mount Everest in 2006.
Another Malaysian also conquered Mount Everest on May 18 - Muhammad Hawari Hashim.
The 33-year-old who is hearing-impaired was reported to have successfully reached Everest’s peak at 3.30pm (Nepal time) on Thursday. - Mkini
