No compromise on school bullying issue - deputy minister

The Education Ministry will not compromise on bullying in schools and will ask the police to carry out investigations in schools where gangsterism is found to be taking place.

Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying said her ministry and schools have a role to play in ensuring that every school is a safe place for students to learn.

“For the ministry, if this culture of gangsterism becomes more serious and difficult to curb, it is possible that we will ask for help from Bukit Aman because all schools in the country should be free from negative elements.

“The ministry will also request police liaison officers to monitor and patrol more often in schools that have records of bullying cases so that this issue can be curbed,” she said in George Town, Penang, today.

The Tanjong MP spoke to reporters when approached at the Aidilfitri open house of the parliamentary constituency which was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng.

Hui Ying was commenting on a recent viral video of a bullying incident, believed to have happened at a secondary school in Butterworth, Penang.
