Fire breaks out at Mid Valley Megamall, no casualties reported

A fire broke out at the Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur today.

Social media is abuzz with videos and photos of raging flames and thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

The smoke is even visible from the Federal Highway and surrounding office buildings.

According to the mall's management, the fire broke out at the external TNB substation at Mid Valley City and was subsequently contained by the Emergency Response Team.

"Members of the Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene at 10.42am to subdue the fire.

"As of 11.38am, we can confirm that there have been no injuries or casualties reported," the management said on its official Facebook page.

Firefighters are currently conducting investigations at the scene and securing the premises without disrupting the mall operations, it added.

"In prioritising the safety of all present, temporary disruption to the power supply will be implemented until authorities authorise its restoration.

"Mid Valley City will be closed until further notice. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to reiterate that the safety of our shoppers and guests remains our top priority."

Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall's Command and Control Centre (KLCCC) said on Twitter that two lanes of the road adjacent to the scene had to be closed for traffic for safety reasons and the police are there to control traffic flow.

Meanwhile, cinema chain GSC also announced that it would cancel all of its shows at the mall for the day, although its premises within the mall was not affected by the fire.

According to a notice posted on its official Facebook, GSC said the cinema will be closed until further notice and refunds will be offered for all purchased tickets.

"If you have purchased the tickets online, you will be automatically refunded within 14 working days.

“If you have purchased the tickets on the ground, please keep the ticket and return to the cinema once we open for a refund within seven days.

"We regret any inconvenience caused and ask for your understanding during this time. Please stay tuned for further updates.

“The safety of our patrons and employees is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation," the notice adds.
