Pahang opposition leader Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has welcomed the decree by state regent Tengku Hassanal Sultan Abdullah to provide "fair allocations" to Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmakers.
"We would like to state our utmost gratitude to Tuanku. An order has been indirectly issued to the state government, to channel allocations to all assemblypersons.
"Tuanku (above) mentioned that opposition lawmakers were also chosen by the rakyat, and as such, their choice should be respected," the PAS deputy president was quoted saying by the party's official mouthpiece Harakah Daily today.
With the decree, it is time for the allocations, which have been denied in the past, to be endorsed by the state government, he added.
Earlier this year, the opposition in the Pahang state legislative assembly alleged that they were being treated like a "stepchild" after being denied allocations.
Yesterday, Tengku Hassanal urged the Pahang government to give "fair allocations" to the opposition lawmakers in the state.
"It has been 66 years since the country achieved independence, and we should adopt mature politics where the opposition should be 'celebrated' equally for being elected into office by the rakyat.
"Fair allocations should be given to the opposition too," Tengku Hassanal said at the opening ceremony of the 15th Pahang legislative assembly’s first sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang in Kuantan yesterday.
Elaborating, Tuan Ibrahim said the regent's decree was an "order" to the Pahang state government.
Allocations, he stressed, were crucial for elected lawmakers to use in the case of a disaster, among others.
"Let's say there's a storm somewhere, and the victims will come to the service centre seeking immediate funds," he said, adding that all aid will be channeled through the district office, and undergo a stringent vetting process to prevent misappropriation. - Mkini
