Sanusi denies knowing man who crowdfunded to settle his compensation

Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has denied knowing an individual seen in a viral video collecting donations on his behalf to settle compensation awarded in a defamation suit.

"I have settled the compensation with (Kedah Pakatan Harapan chairperson) Mahfuz (Omar). I do not know the individual.

"Not connected to me. Maybe he (donation collector) sympathises with me," Harakahdaily quoted the PAS lawmaker as saying.

He was referring to a video by TikTok user Fadli Hussin, who went around on a donation drive to help fund Sanusi's compensation payout to Mahfuz, while carrying a tin can, believed at KL Sentral.

In the video, Fadli introduces himself as a Perikatan Nasional member who is collecting funds for "his MB". While some donated, others refused.

At the end of the video, he acknowledges that the donation drive was a prank and said the collected money will be donated to the poor. He further urged Sanusi to pay the compensation himself.

Fadhli's trolling did not sit well with a lot of netizens, with some saying they have lodged a police report against him.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Mahfuz to check regarding the compensation payout.

Earlier this month, Mahfuz asked Sanusi to pay the compensation awarded in the defamation suit or risk having a bankruptcy notice filed against him.

The Court of Appeal ordered Sanusi to pay RM120,000 in damages, and RM10,000 in legal costs to Mahfuz, after losing a defamation suit the latter filed against him.

On Oct 9, 2019, the former Pokok Sena MP filed a suit against Sanusi over a post uploaded on the PAS lawmaker’s Facebook which linked Mahfuz to the opening of a Sports Toto gambling outlet in Pokok Sena, Kedah.

In November 2021, the High Court upheld the suit and ordered Sanusi to pay the damages. He then filed an appeal to the Court of Appeal to set aside the High Court decision but was dismissed. - Mkini
