About 12 people clad in yellow, bearing yellow balloons, gathered in downtown Kuala Lumpur today and called for the prime minister to be ousted.
However, this was not another Bersih gathering, but the “launch” of a movement by Perikatan Nasional-linked activist group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM).
SAMM founder Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, had previously said the group would hold a rally against the government soon but stressed that today’s event was not it.
However, he proclaimed that street protests would eventually lead to Anwar’s downfall.
“Anwar rose through the streets and I believe the streets will drag Anwar back down,” Badrul said when addressing the press outside the Sogo shopping mall.
He did not specify when exactly the group would organise a rally against the prime minister.
“We do not want to topple the government, we just want to change Anwar,” he also said.
The movement, dubbed “Tukar PM Segera” (change the PM now), claimed that Anwar has failed to deliver on reforms and tackle the rising cost of living while endorsing corruption and nepotism.
Badrul - who is a Bersatu member - also claimed that the “social contract” on bumiputera and Islamic matters is being undermined.
The SAMM founder had previously peddled a racist conspiracy theory that police were trying to cover up his complaints against Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
He said this was because non-Muslim investigators were put in charge of police reports by him and Yeoh instead of Muslim cops.
The police shot down his allegations.
Promotional material for SAMM’s event today co-opted artwork of Anwar by graphic artist Fahmi Reza from his 2015 colouring book on political figures.
SAMM had edited the artwork to give Anwar a clown nose, as well as a black eye.
Badrul said Anwar had become the “badut negara” (national clown) since he became prime minister. - Mkini
