KUALA LUMPUR: More than 10,000 people, of various races and ages, participated in the Keretapi Sarong 2023 (KS 2023) programme, which aims to instil the spirit of love for the country and its diversity, in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations today.

They proved that there is nothing shameful in donning traditional attire, complete with various ethnic ornaments.

Some were proudly clad in kain batik and kain pelikat, which symbolise the country’s culture and heritage.

It was like a trip down memory lane as KS 2023, themed “Ethnicity and Unity”, was also jazzed up with a sarong fashion show, a flash mob and joget lambak, complete with the tunes from the 1960s and 1970s filling the air.

KS 2023 director Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman said the programme had achieved its main objective of seeing Malaysians in ethnic attire travelling on public transport while promoting the traditional sarongs.

The Keretapi Sarong was first introduced by an NGO, Random Alphabet, in 2012 before being taken over by Locco (a community group) in 2017, involving thousands of participants travelling on public transport wearing either kain batik or kain pelikat.

This year, KS 2023 commenced simultaneously from seven stations, namely KL Sentral LRT, Gombak LRT, Ampang LRT, Subang Jaya LRT, Kajang MRT, Bandar Utama MRT and KLIA Transit, before converging on Dataran Merdeka.

Similar events also took place simultaneously in major cities such as in Johor Bahru (along Sungai Segget), at the Ipoh railway station (KTMB Ipoh) and in Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu Cultural Village), as well as in London, UK (Battersea Power Station). - FMT
