MCMC finalising talks with service providers on cheaper internet

Fahmi Fadzil said the negotiations have taken some time as it involves various parties, but the outcome will result in a significant reduction in internet prices.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is in the final stage of negotiations with broadband service providers to roll out cheaper internet services.

Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has requested for negotiations to be concluded next week to enable the signing of a memorandum of understanding between his ministry and the broadband service providers.

Fahmi said the negotiations have taken some time as it involves various parties, but the outcome will result in a significant reduction in internet prices.

“I believe we are almost reaching a conclusion. I expect it to be concluded by next week,” Bernama quoted him as saying after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly here today.

On Aug 7, Fahmi had said that all broadband internet service providers had been instructed to reduce internet prices starting in September, in line with the implementation of the mandatory standard on access pricing, which would lead to a reduction in internet wholesale prices and cheaper packages.

He said the reduction in internet prices was also aimed at decreasing the inflation rate in the telecommunications sector, which had dropped from 0% to -3.7% as of last July.- FMT
