Contest in Muar again without Harapan's backing, Syed Saddiq dared

Pakatan Harapan Muar has challenged Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman to vacate his seat and re-contest on Muda’s own capacity after he quit the government bloc in Parliament.

At a press conference today, Harapan Muar secretary Abdullah Sahid claimed that Syed Saddiq won the Muar seat with Harapan’s support.

“At a time when the country needs political stability to repair the damage that has been done, Muda is willing to take the path of playing political opposition, hence undermining the stability of the country for personal interest.

“Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi)’s DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) is simply a half-baked and hypocritical political excuse for Syed Saddiq to rationalise his hasty and sloppy political actions.

“Syed Saddiq shouldn’t hesitate to vacate the Muar seat if he was truly confident of winning it back on Muda’s own capacity,” he said, reading a statement.

Muda president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman

Syed Saddiq previously snubbed calls for him to vacate his seat, claiming that it was not him who had strayed from promises to voters in the 15th general election (GE15).

“What platform did we (Muda and Pakatan Harapan) campaign on? Before GE15, we vowed not to drop corruption (cases), to fight corruption, to bring reforms.

“But the difference between what was promised before the elections and after is astronomical,” he said.

During GE15, Muda had an electoral pact with Harapan.

Harapan critics claimed the Muda president was re-elected as a lawmaker because of this pact.

The Muar MP exited the government bloc in protest of the prosecution withdrawing charges against Zahid in the Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case.

Abdullah said that Muda’s dismal loss in the recent six state elections, when it contested solo, proved that his own seat was due to Harapan’s support.

“If Muda contests in Muar without the support of Harapan, it will have the same fate.

“Muar voters choose wisely. They didn’t choose (vote) based on Syed Saddiq but due to the ‘reformasi’ movement led by (Harapan chairperson) Anwar Ibrahim.

‘Hand it back’

“Harapan was established in Muar in 1999 and continues to move forward. Let's hand it back to the people of Muar to elect local leaders who truly carry the aspirations of Muar voters who support Anwar as prime minister,” he said.

Syed Saddiq first defended the Muar seat in 2018 under the Bersatu ticket when the party was still part of the Harapan coalition.

He then contested under Muda in GE15, while being in an electoral pact with Harapan.

Harapan had fielded PKR in the 2008 and 2013 elections, whose youth wing has also called on the Muar MP to vacate his seat.
