PAS leader likens Zahid's DNAA to 'bola tanggung' begging to be smashed

There is no doubt that the controversial discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would be used as campaign fodder in the upcoming Pelangai by-election in Pahang, according to Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

The PAS deputy president described the issue as a “bola tanggung”, which in sporting terms referred to a situation in which the opponent is able to score an easy point.

“So it would be a waste for those who do not take the opportunity (to capitalise on the issue),” he told reporters at Parliament’s lobby.

Tuan Ibrahim (above) was asked if Perikatan Nasional would use the issue in its campaign for the state seat, which fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Johari Harun from BN in a plane crash on Aug 17.

The Kubang Kerian MP said the opposition coalition would raise all issues concerning national and public interests.

As for Zahid’s DNAA, Tuan Ibrahim said: “We need an explanation from the attorney-general on why the prosecution was discontinued.”

On Sept 4, the prosecution withdrew 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption, and money laundering in relation to Yayasan Akalbudi funds, which sparked an uproar.

However, the DNAA, granted five days before the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections in Johor, did not turn the tide in favour of PN.

Principled MPs welcomed

Meanwhile, Tuan Ibrahim also welcomed Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s decision to withdraw his support for the Pakatan Harapan-BN coalition government over Zahid’s case, denying Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

“We welcome any MP who is principled,” said the PAS leader.

“The people are not questioning the court, but why the prosecution was not continued when a prima facie case had been established,” he added.

The prosecution had submitted 11 grounds to halt the proceedings against Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister.

Among the reasons given was to investigate the possibility that Zahid was selectively prosecuted. - Mkini
