Cops quiz Muhyiddin again over campaign speeches

Police have quizzed Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin a second time over speeches he delivered during the Sept 9 by-election campaigns.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain confirmed he was questioned again today.

According to Sinar Harian, the speech in question was delivered in Simpang Jeram on Sept 3 where Muhyiddin allegedly said that Malays have lost political power and control of the federal government.

On Sept 12, the police recorded Muhyiddin's statement regarding another speech delivered on the same day within the Pulai constituency, where another by-election campaign was ongoing.

The Pulai speech saw Muhyiddin declaring it was "haram" to vote for Pakatan Harapan.

This speech was being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code for "statements conducing to public mischief" and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for abusing network facilities.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang

Apart from Muhyiddin, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad are also facing similar investigations over speeches relating to "3R" - race, royalty and religion.

Muhyiddin's opponents have accused him of abusing religion for political purposes.

The Bersatu president later clarified that critics had taken his speech out of context and that he was fully aware that he was in no position to issue a religious edict.

Muhyiddin argued that his speech had urged voters not to support Harapan because of the rising cost of living.
