For causing ruckus, Shahidan, Rayer bag 'most controversial MP' title

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and Arau MP Shahidan Kassim have been revealed to be the “most controversial MP”, based on an analysis conducted by civil society group MyMP on the Dewan Rakyat Hansard for the 14th and 15th parliamentary sittings respectively.

MyMP founder Lau Chak Onn described the analysis as a light-hearted survey, which was tabulated based on instances where there was a ruckus in Parliament, and who were the usual instigators of such commotions.

Lau said his small team at MyMP scraped the official Dewan Rakyat Hansard using the Python programming language and subsequently searched for the keywords such as “parlimen riuh” and “parlimen ketawa” to identify instances which brought the House down.

“In the July 2018-October 2022 14th parliamentary sitting, Rayer (above, right) won a landslide victory with 531 ‘riuh’ instances, while Shahidan (above) came in second with 391 ‘riuh’ instances followed by then-Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman with 291 ‘riuh’ instances.

“As for the current 15th parliamentary sitting from December 2022-June 2023, Shahidan claimed the title with 72 ‘riuh’ instances while Rayer came in third with 44 ‘riuh’ instances.

“Pendang MP Awang Hashim secured the second place with 55 ‘riuh’ instances,” Lau said in a press conference at the Ideas Malaysia headquarters at Wisma Hang Sam in Kuala Lumpur today.

While Shahidan and Rayer were crowned with the “notorious” title, Lau noted both MPs were effective parliamentarians, attributing this to data on their attendance, involvement, and questions asked in the House.

“This analysis was conducted to get the people to continue to monitor the MPs’ performances but in an entertaining and fun way.

“For the 15th parliamentary session, we have only gathered small samples of data but we will continue working on the update from time to time,” he added.

He also expressed hope for MyMP to look into state assemblypersons through their respective state Hansards in the near future.
