Friday (8/9/2023) Notes From The Quran : 'qurban' and 'hadi'

 

Non-Muslims can skip this. Again it is too technical.

I actually prepared these notes during the Hari Raya Haji in July 2023. 

The arabic word qurban is mentioned a few times in the Quran. Qurban means sacrifice. Here are some occurences.

I have yellow highlighted 'qurban' in arabic and sacrifice in English. 

 

Surah 5:27 ۞ وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ٱبْنَىْ ءَادَمَ بِٱلْحَقِّ إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًۭا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ ٱلْـَٔاخَرِ قَالَ لَأَقْتُلَنَّكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

Surah 5:27  Recite to them the truth of the story of the two sons of Adam. Behold! both  sacrificed (animal) sacrifices  قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًۭا : It was accepted from one of the two, but not from the other. He said : "Surely I will slay thee." The other said, "Surely Allah doth accept from the righteous".

 

Here is another example of qurban:

Surah 3:183   ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَآ أَلَّا نُؤْمِنَ لِرَسُولٍ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَنَا بِقُرْبَانٍۢ تَأْكُلُهُ ٱلنَّارُ ۗ قُلْ قَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رُسُلٌۭ مِّن قَبْلِى بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَبِٱلَّذِى قُلْتُمْ فَلِمَ قَتَلْتُمُوهُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

Surah 3:183 Those who said: "Surely Allah took our promise that we do not believe in a messenger unless He brought us a burnt sacrifice بِقُرْبَانٍۢ " Say: "Surely there came to you messengers before me, with clear explanations and with what ye say: why then did ye slay them, if ye speak the truth?"

 

So these are two examples of the arabic word 'qurban' found in the Quran which mean sacrifice.

 

Now here is the arabic word hada, hadya, hadyi, tahdi, nahtadi which are all rooted in 'guide', guidance etc. 

Surah 7:43  وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهِمُ ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ وَقَالُوا۟ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى هَدَىٰنَا لِهَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِىَ لَوْلَآ أَنْ هَدَىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ ۖ لَقَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ وَنُودُوٓا۟ أَن تِلْكُمُ ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

Surah 7:43  And We shall remove what is in their hearts of any sense of injury, beneath them will be rivers flowing and they shall say: "Praise be to Allah, who hath guided us هَدَىٰنَا to this, never could we have found guidance لِنَهْتَدِىَ had it not been for the guidance هَدَىٰنَا of Allah: indeed  the messengers of our Lord have brought unto us the truth." And they shall call : "Behold! the garden before you! Ye have been made its inheritors, for your deeds."

Here is another example of hadyi which is also rooted in hada (guidance). However do note the English translation here. This is from Surah 2:196 which is quite long. I have only taken the first part which is relevant here:

 

Surah 2:196  وَأَتِمُّوا۟ ٱلْحَجَّ وَٱلْعُمْرَةَ لِلَّهِ ۚ فَإِنْ أُحْصِرْتُمْ فَمَا ٱسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ ٱلْهَدْىِ ۖ

Surah 2:196  And complete the Hajj and 'umra for Allah. But if ye are surrounded/prevented then whatever is easy from the sacrificial animals ٱلْهَدْىِ

Here the word al-hadyi refers sacrificial animals.

I checked the Index of words in the Quran. There are 316 forms of this word hadi (guidance) found in 95 verses of the Quran.  Including Surah 2:196 above which I have screenshot the reference here :

There are many more references (316 references in 95 verses). Too many for here.
