PETALING JAYA: Former Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy has played down his meeting with Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, describing it as two friends catching up over national politics.

Ramasamy, who quit DAP in August after he was dropped by the party for the Penang state elections, said he had known the opposition leader during his “parliamentary days”.

Ramasamy was the Batu Kawan MP for one term from 2008 to 2013.

“He is my friend and we have maintained our friendship.

“I called on him in Kuala Lumpur yesterday just to catch up with national politics. Nothing more,” he told FMT on his meeting with the Larut MP.

Earlier today, Hamzah uploaded a picture of him with Ramasamy and two other former Penang DAP leaders who are closely aligned with the former Perai assemblyman, namely David Marshel and M Satees.

Both David and Satees, the former Bagan Dalam assemblyman who was also dropped from the recent state polls, have quit the party.

Ramasamy served as the Penang deputy chief minister II from 2008 until the dissolution of the state legislative assembly in June.

The three-term Perai assemblyman, who joined DAP in 2005, left the party a few days before the Aug 12 polls in Penang and five other states.

He then put his support behind Satees and Marshel, both of whom contested as independents for the Bagan Dalam and Perai seats, respectively.

When asked about another picture of him with Perikatan Nasional’s Taman Medan assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin, Ramasamy denied having planned a meeting with his former colleague in the Penang state government. He said he merely ran into Afif at the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya yesterday.

Afif was the Penang agriculture, agro-based industries, rural development and health executive councillor from 2013 until he left PKR to join Bersatu in June 2020.

Afif had posted a picture of himself with Ramasamy, Satees and David on his Facebook recently. - FMT
