Syed Saddiq ticked off for 'lapdog' swipe at DAP

Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has come under fire today for calling DAP a “lapdog” to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following the latter's discharge on corruption charges.

DAP's Howard Lee and Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali chided him for making the “misguided” remarks yesterday.

"Syed Saddiq's latest post on social media X (formerly known as Twitter) is clearly malicious and misguided when he labels DAP a 'lapdog', hypocritical, power-crazed and unprincipled.

"He also specifically attacked Perak DAP chairperson Nga Kor Ming by calling him a puppet who sanctifies corrupt individuals because of his position as minister,” Lee (above, right) said in a statement.

The Ipoh Barat MP urged Syed Saddiq to do some self-reflection.

"DAP is a principled party and loyal friend who has supported and helped Syed Saddiq and his party... DAP still provides legal services and solidarity to him when he himself is accused of a breach of trust case.

"He should be more self-reflective and look in the mirror once in a while," Lee said.

Lee pointed out that Syed Saddiq needs to focus first on his own court case, adding that he need not be rude or childish to satisfy his hunger for popularity.

"The question that Syed Saddiq also needs to answer is how will he respond if his own court case is also given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA).

"Will his own party also be classified as a lapdog, hypocritical, power-mad and unprincipled for having such a president?" he asked.

Syed Saddiq is facing corruption charges over the alleged misappropriation of RM1.12 million funds from his former party Bersatu.

The Muar MP previously threatened to withdraw support for the coalition government, following the DNAA given to Zahid in the Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case.

Nga said that it would be more “professional” for Syed Saddiq to discuss the matter with the coalition government’s leadership.

'DAP a good friend to Muda'

Expressing his disappointment with Syed Saddiq’s remarks, Sheikh Umar urged the Muda president to remember that DAP has been a good friend to him.

"Nga's statement, to me, is very neutral. But Syed Saddiq's response is a display of egoism of the highest level.

"He seems to have forgotten how loyal and supportive DAP once was to him and Muda.

"During last year's state election in Johor, we know how much sacrifices DAP had made for Muda," the former Johor executive council member said.

Perak DAP chairperson Nga Kor Ming

Syed Saddiq should realise that DAP has done a lot for Muda, and it is in Johor where the party has its single parliamentary and state seat, Sheikh Umar added.

"That's why for me, Syed Saddiq should not be so quick to throw such accusations at DAP.

"In terms of principle, he should not go so far as to label DAP harshly. Nga was simply voicing the attitude that should be taken by Muda in accordance with its position of supporting the unity government,” Sheikh Umar said.

Instead of launching an open ambush, he said an MP who supports the government should use internal channels to seek clarification.

"He (Syed Saddiq) is not Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy (the former Umno Youth chief) is free to attack because he is an outsider. This is very different from Syed Saddiq and should not have happened," Sheikh Umar added.

Lee also reminded Syed Saddiq that DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had issued a statement following Zahid's DNAA, saying that DAP respects the process and the court's decision but at the time same, demanding an open explanation from the attorney-general.

"DAP will always uphold the principle of separation of powers between the judicial, executive and legislature," he added. - Mkini
