PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s winning candidate Nazri Abdul Rahman said his victory in the Simpang Jeram by-election would dispel the notion that the PH partnership with Barisan Nasional was not accepted by voters, especially Malay voters.

He said his victory was a result of the hard work and strong partnership between PH and BN, Bernama reported.

“This win isn’t mine alone, it’s a win for the entire team, as we know for this election it’s the PH-BN coalition. I could not have won so handsomely without their cooperation and hard work,” he told reporters.

Nazri won by a majority of 3,514 votes, about 1,100 votes more than the 2,399-vote majority obtained by PH in the Johor state elections last year.

He polled 13,844 votes while his rival, Dr Mazri Yahya of Perikatan Nasional, obtained 10,330 votes, with independent candidate S Jeganathan obtaining 311 votes.

Nazri, 56, was an engineer with the Muar municipal council for 30 years until stepping down for the election.

He had also served as a special officer to the late Salahuddin Ayub, who won the Simpang Jeram seat twice. In 2022, Salahuddin, who was Amanah deputy president, won in a four-way contest against candidates from PN, BN and Pejuang. He died in July. - FMT
