Mitra roadmap workshops to set focused direction - minister

Workshops to review the new direction for the Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra) are meant to set a more focused direction for the unit, said National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang.

It also sought to harmonise Mitra's mandate with that of the 2021 Indian Community Action Plan.

He was responding to criticism from Makkal Sakthi who claimed that the ministry decision was an attempt to fool the Indian community, in addition to wasting time and money.

This is as the "Indian Blueprint' introduced during Najib Abdul Razak's administration already had the complete data on how to bring the community forward.

"That's someone's opinion (criticism). But for me as a minister when Mitra was given back to us, there needs to be a proper direction. We don't want the previous direction anymore.

"We still accept the blueprint. This is about Indian community issues that were previously outlined in a very general blueprint.

"Mitra is not an agency for all Indian community problems because other ministries and agencies are also involved in socio-economic, health, education, and so on,” he said.

"Mitra is just a small agency for the Indian community and we hope to determine a more focused direction, that's what we want," he added.

Aaron said this when met after launching a two-day roadmap workshop for Mitra in Putrajaya.

Engagement sessions

Approximately 90 participants representing government agencies, corporate figures, private representatives, religious organisations, NGOs, and youth associations are attending the workshop which starts today.

In addition to the expected participation of political leaders on the last day of the workshop, an engagement session was held with all Indian MPs and state assembly members on March 27 at Parliament.

Previously, Aaron told the Dewan Rakyat that he did not have a clear understanding of Mitra.

Following that, Indian NGOs criticised him for allegedly failing to handle Mitra issues. - Mkini
