KUALA LUMPUR: The central database hub (Padu) saw 28 distributed denial-of-service attacks on the first and second days of its launch on Jan 2, says economy minister Rafizi Ramli.
“However, there have been no more such cyber attacks from Jan 4 until now,” he said when winding up the debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Rafizi said Padu also successfully withstood 32.86 million attacks involving intrusion prevention system (IPS) protection.
He gave an assurance the hub would be safe from attacks outside the country, given its use of geofencing and only allowing users within the nation to make changes to the database.
“If we do not implement geofencing, we will be open to attacks from the whole world,” he said.
Padu saw a hacking scare last month, with Rafizi criticising online forum Lowyat.net for “happily spreading misinformation” and claiming that Padu was hacked.
Lowyat.net had reported that Padu and the national population and family development board (LPPKN), an agency under the women, family and community development ministry, had been hacked by a group known as R00TK1T.
The online forum said the hackers claimed to have “stolen data from Padu”, and alleged that the group had breached LPPKN’s security infrastructure as well as stolen more than 27TB worth of data from its servers.
Lowyat.net later clarified that the Padu database purportedly hacked by R00TK1T referred to LPPKN’s management and service delivery unit. - FMT
