PETALING JAYA: A Penang DAP leader has urged Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to apologise for calling DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook arrogant.
Penang DAP organising secretary Phee Boon Chee said Akmal’s remarks were absurd and irresponsible.
In a statement, Phee said Loke has excelled in carrying out his official duties and working with other parties in the unity government.
“On the other hand, Akmal has often shown his immaturity in the past,” he said, citing the Melaka executive councillor’s statements on the controversial sale of socks bearing the word “Allah”, and the waving of Chinese flags at a cultural event.
“Akmal must immediately apologise unreservedly to Loke over his illogical and irresponsible statement.”
In a recent interview with Malaysiakini, Loke had said he chose not to respond to Akmal’s remarks as he felt he was on a different level compared with the Umno Youth chief.
He said his main focus was on his responsibilities as a Cabinet member.
Akmal hit back at Loke, accusing him of being arrogant and saying he would continue to speak up for those deemed “low-level” compared with the senior DAP leader.
Akmal, who has consistently been a vocal critic of DAP despite the party being allies with Umno, drew flak from several DAP leaders for his remarks.
Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman Pang Sock Tao said Akmal needed to respect Loke, who was among the top leaders in the unity government. - FMT
