Abang Jo snuffs out hope for political coup

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg, whose Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition was key to forming the federal government through majority support in Parliament, has again ruled out the possibility of a political coup.

He said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should be allowed to serve a full term in office and let the coalition government do its work.

"Why (is there a) need to replace him (Anwar) when his term has not ended yet?" he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times today.

"If people are not happy with us (coalition government), then (they should) wait for the general election.

"But at this moment, don't (force change)," he added.

Abang Johari was commenting on the preoccupation of some to replace Anwar as prime minister.

The Sarawak premier did not name names. However, last month, Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria revealed that plans are still underway for Perikatan Nasional to seize power before the next general election.

Using Najib rally?

There was speculation that PAS was using a rally in solidarity with former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak as an attempt to win over Umno support.

However, Umno officially backed out of the rally after a decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong reinforcing that Najib's bid for clemency via house arrest must go through the Pardons Board.

In a scenario where PN does somehow lure Umno and BN to support its bid to form the government, the opposition coalition will not have sufficient numbers without support from GRS' 23 MPs. - Mkini
