Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has playfully teased Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing for frequently requesting funds instead of generating revenue.
Speaking at the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign launch, Anwar quipped that whenever Tiong (above) sees him, he would ask for more money.
“I said your role is to get more money, not ask for more money.
“I also said your role is to reduce foreign travel and bring foreigners here. But we have a tourism minister who travels a bit too much.
“Joking, joking. Don't take it too seriously,” he said with laughter.
‘Make it landmark Visit Malaysia year’
During the Budget 2025 presentation, Anwar announced an allocation of nearly RM550 million to promote tourism and support Visit Malaysia 2026 activities.
This included RM110 million to enhance tourist sites, foster eco-tourism collaborations, and support Unesco nominations.
Anwar highlighted the Visit Malaysia campaign’s goal today by outlining four themes - ecotourism and sustainability; modern attractions and innovation; cultural heritage and diversity; and strong partnerships.
“The campaign must move forward with roadshows and festivals at minimal cost.
“I am confident that the Tourism Ministry, from the minister to the secretary-general and the Tourism Development Corporation, will do their best to ensure 2026 is a landmark year for Malaysian tourism,” Anwar said. - Mkini
