KUALA TERENGGANU: A widow and her partner are facing the possibility of corporal punishment after being caught for khalwat (close proximity) for the second time last Tuesday.
Terengganu Islamic Affairs Department (JHEAT) Enforcement Division chief assistant commissioner Aizi Saidi Abdul Aziz said the 36-year-old woman was arrested with her 32-year-old boyfriend at a rented house in Kuala Ibai around 3am.
He said the couple was taken to the Enforcement Unit of the Kuala Terengganu District Religious Office for further investigation and was released on bail.
"Based on records, they have previously been caught for the same offence," he said.
"For a second offence, the couple could be sentenced to corporal punishment, depending on the judge's consideration, whether in public or prison," he added.
He said they are being investigated under Section 31(a) of the Syariah Criminal Offenses (Takzir) (Terengganu) Amendment Enactment 2022.
In addition, Aizi Saidi said 146 khalwat arrests had been reported across the state in the past eight months since January.
"Kemaman recorded the highest number of arrests, with 42 cases, followed by Kuala Terengganu (41 cases), Besut (19 cases), Marang (17 cases), Dungun (13 cases), Setiu (4 cases), and Hulu Terengganu (2 cases)," he said. - NST
