Former Malaysian ambassador to the United States Nazri Aziz has again hit out at critics who zeroed in on a photograph of him holding a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) poster, citing Malaysia’s objections to US President Donald Trump’s recent policies.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Nazri reaffirmed that his action while attending a Trump victory rally last month, together with his wife Haflin Saiful who shared their photograph on her Instagram, had no diplomatic impact.
“There is no diplomatic impact. Americans welcome a foreigner supporting America to be great,” said Nazri who is due to permanently return to Malaysia after his two-year tenure in Washington ended on Feb 8.
“I didn’t say I support Trump. And I don’t care about social media reactions.
“I was ambassador to the US and as long as I didn’t upset them, I’m fine. Malaysians who criticise me, I don’t give a damn,” he stressed.

Previously, The Vibes reported Nazri as saying that he was presented with the MAGA placard and decided to snap a photograph with it as a token of remembrance of the Republican party’s victory rally.
Since being elected America’s 47th president, Trump has announced various decisions that raised international concerns, particularly concerning immigration policies and the war in Gaza.
Among others, Trump has declared that the “US will take over the Gaza Strip” shortly after proposing the permanent resettlement of Palestinians outside the enclave.
Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has since reiterated Malaysia’s objection, describing the plan as “beyond sane thought”. - Mkini
