Bakery company fined RM72k for inland water effluent discharge

A cake and bakery firm today was fined RM72,000 over effluent discharge into inland waters nearly two years ago.

In a Facebook posting, the Environment Department (DOE) revealed the outcome of the case against King’s Confectionery Sdn Bhd at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today.

According to the DOE, the company today pleaded guilty to three charges linked to the offence committed on Sept 20, 2023.

The government department said the firm was fined RM40,000, RM20,000 and RM12,000 for the first, second and third charges, in the case linked to the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

Two of the charges dealt with the dumping of industrial effluent greater than the acceptable chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration limit into inland waters.

The other charge is in relation to the violation of the prohibition against discharging industrial or mixed effluent into inland waters.

The DOE said the three charges are linked to Regulations 11(1)(b), 12(b) and 18 of the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009.

However, the DOE did not provide additional details on the specific location where the offence was perpetrated. - Mkini
