SUNGAI PETANI: A woman had a close brush with death when a coconut tree crashed onto her car along Kilometre 69 of the Alor Star-Butterworth Trunk Road yesterday.
The incident quickly went viral on social media
Kuala Muda Police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the 6.10pm incident involved a 27-year-old housewife whose car was crushed by the tree.
"Initial checks found that the accident occurred as she was exiting a junction from Kampung Paya Kerchut, heading towards Tikam Batu town.
"Suddenly, a coconut tree on the left side of the road toppled and landed on her car," he said when contacted today.
The victim was taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment but did not suffer serious injuries.
Wan Azharuddin said the incident is believed to have happened after a landowner hired someone to cut down the tree.
"The case is being investigated under Rule 16 LN 166/59. We have recorded statements from the driver and the landowner to assist in the investigation.
"As of now, we are tracking down the individual who cut the tree," he added. - NST
