5.1-magnitude quake off Sumatra triggers tremors in Peninsular Malaysia

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of northern Sumatra early this morning caused tremors to be felt in several states across Peninsular Malaysia.

According to the meteorological department (MetMalaysia), Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya were affected.

The earthquake, with a depth of 10km, struck 41km east of Sibolga, Indonesia, at 6.22am.

MetMalaysia confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

MetMalaysia had also reported three other earthquakes in the region over the past 12 hours – a 5.1-magnitude quake in Indonesia’s Timor region at 1.42am; a 5.8-magnitude quake in Seram, which is part of the republic’s Maluku province at 1.32am; and a 5.0-magnitude quake in Mindanao, the Philippines, at 11.41pm yesterday.

All three quakes also posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia, it added. - FMT
