Ex-Bersatu man undergoes surgery after accidentally shooting himself

JOHOR BARU: Former Bersatu associate chief Datuk Tan Lek Khang is currently undergoing surgery after he was seriously injured in an accidental shooting during a practice session today.

Former Johor Bersatu associate secretary Yeo Kwee Kwang said Tan, 41, was rushed to Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) at 5.30pm following the incident, which occurred at a shooting range in Kota Tinggi.

"He was brought here by ambulance and taken to the emergency department.

"He has since been moved to the operating theatre and surgery is ongoing," Yeo said when met at the hospital.

It is understood that Tan accidentally shot himself during a firearms training session at a shooting range in Kota Tinggi.

While Tan holds a valid firearm licence, initial reports suggest the incident occurred while he was unloading his weapon.

"We only received information from close friends as no one from our side was with him during the incident," Yeo explained.

"However, a friend told us he had spoken to him over the phone between 2pm and 3pm before the incident.

"It is understood that during training, there may have been a remaining bullet in the firearm that he did not notice, which led to the discharge and caused injuries to his chest and underarm area."

Family members, including his wife Datin Tan Nie Nie, along with political associates, were seen gathered at the hospital from 6pm awaiting updates.

Yeo asked the public to pray for Tan's recovery.

District police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said confirmation of the case would only be provided once an official statement is issued.

Tan made headlines on Feb 13 when he announced his resignation from Bersatu, citing a loss of confidence in the leadership of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In the 2022 Johor state election, Tan contested the Bekok state seat under the Perikatan Nasional banner but lost to the Barisan Nasional candidate. - NST
