Don't misinterpret, BN's N Sembilan reps acted in good faith - Zahid

The move by 14 Negeri Sembilan BN assemblypersons to withdraw support for Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun was taken in good faith to ensure that all parties continue to respect and uphold the royal and customary institutions, said BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Their actions should not be misinterpreted, he said, as it was intended to strengthen the position of those institutions, especially among elected representatives from Umno and BN.

According to him, the assemblypersons’ move had nonetheless raised various perceptions and interpretations that differed from their original intention.

“I want to say that the action taken by the 14 assemblypersons in Negeri Sembilan is a step made in good faith so that the royal and customary institutions in the state can be respected and supported by all its people, especially by assemblypersons from Umno and BN,” he said.

Zahid said this after officiating the “MyDigital ID: Powering Trusted Digital Access Across Malaysia’s Digital Ecosystem” forum and a MyDigital ID memorandum of understanding signing ceremony in Putrajaya today.

Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, said he held a meeting with all 14 assemblypersons to clarify the situation and correct perceptions arising among the people.

He said from the findings, the assemblypersons maintained their previous stand but remained with the Negeri Sembilan coalition government.

“We respect the decision made by the assemblypersons, but the party at the national level and all the assemblypersons I met agreed that we continue to be with the Negeri Sembilan Madani government so that there are no activities that undermine the state government’s well-being for the sake of the people’s interests as a whole,” he added.

He also stressed that the action was in no way intended to “tebuk atap” or form a state government through the back door, as alleged by some parties.

Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said in a statement that the party continues to support the Negeri Sembilan coalition government, but respects the state assemblypersons’ position that they have lost confidence in the leadership of Aminuddin, who is from PKR.

Asyraf said the issue was discussed in the Umno political bureau meeting yesterday, which made several resolutions.

Among others, the party views seriously the recent developments in the Negeri Sembilan royal and customary institutions, which have sparked a major polemic and serious misunderstandings among members of the component parties forming the state Madani government.

Back to the negotiation table

On whether there is a need to appoint a new Negeri Sembilan menteri besar, Zahid said the matter needs to be brought to the negotiation table by the BN and Pakatan Harapan leadership.

He said BN and Harapan have an 18-point agreement, and any problems must be resolved together.

“In my opinion, the prime minister (Anwar Ibrahim) as Harapan chairperson is very open-hearted and open-minded for us to look together at any matters in detail so we can resolve them together.

“This is for the interest of the people as a whole. Because we know the country is facing global economic problems and we must be united to not only handle them but also to support the prime minister’s desire to create political stability,” he said.

The 14 BN-Umno assemblypersons previously withdrew their support for Aminuddin on the grounds of loss of confidence in the menteri besar.

Negeri Sembilan Umno chief Jalaluddin Alias said the decision was related to the ongoing crisis involving the four chieftains (undang) who want to remove the Negeri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar from his position.
