KUALA LUMPUR: Tensions flared during a midnight raid at a Bukit Bintang nightclub when a foreign tourist brandished a kerambit at immigration officers.
The man, in his 30s and claiming to be a military veteran, refused to cooperate during inspections and produced the weapon.
"You are all undercover? Fake! I don't believe you are Immigration Department officers. Please leave me alone. I don't know you! Leave me alone.
"I came to Malaysia 10 days ago, and you want to arrest someone who is spending money in your country? I don't believe you! I only deal with policemen," he said.
Despite the threat and verbal abuse, Immigration officers remained calm and attempted to defuse the situation. The man only relented after the police arrived.
He surrendered the kerambit to the police and was taken into custody.
The Op Gegar raid, which began at 12.20am, involved 19 officers from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department.
Two entertainment outlets were targeted following complaints about undocumented migrants.
Several foreigners attempted to flee when the operation began, but the situation was quickly brought under control.
A KL Immigration Department spokesman said 39 people were inspected, including those from Indonesia, Uganda, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Bangladesh.
"At the first premises, five people were detained, comprising three Bangladeshi men and one woman each from Indonesia and Uganda.
"At the second premises, nine Bangladeshi men, seven Vietnamese women, and one Indonesian woman were detained. A Malaysian believed to be the employer was also held," he said.
Those detained were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Detention Depot for investigation under the Immigration Act and Immigration Regulations for misuse of passes and other documentation offences. - NST
