Two soldiers held over brutal assault that left commando with cracked skull

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested two soldiers believed to be involved in an incident that left a commando seriously injured at Kem Iskandar, Mersing, Johor in March.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said investigations into alleged assault have been completed, with case papers submitted to the Johor prosecution director's office on April 28 for further instructions from the Attorney-General's chambers.

A police report was lodged on March 14, at 8.31pm.

The alleged assault, on March 12, left a 25-year-old commando, identified as Trooper Abdul Hamid Talib, with a fractured skull and internal brain bleeding.

He remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at University Malaya Medical Centre.

"The Mersing police headquarters criminal investigation division arrested two 24-year-old soldiers from the same camp on March 14 at 11.45pm on suspicion of involvement in the case.

"On the night of the incident, police also seized a rotan measuring about 72cm, believed to have been used as a weapon in the incident," he said in a statement today.

"Background checks found no prior criminal records, while urine screening tests on both suspects were negative for drugs," he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by using a weapon.

If convicted, the offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment, with a fine or rotan.

He added that police have completed their investigation and the investigation paper was submitted to the state prosecution director on Tuesday.

He said the public can channel any criminal information to the nearest police station or the Johor police hotline at 019-2792095, or the Johor contingent police headquarters operations room at 07-2212999,

Earlier today, Abdul Hamid's family had called on the government to provide an explanation and conduct a thorough investigation into the serious injuries suffered by the Special Service Group member from the 22nd Commando Regiment while inside the camp.

Lawyers for Liberty adviser N. Surendran, who is also the family's spokesman, said the family has so far not received a satisfactory explanation on how Abdul Hamid could have sustained severe injuries that left him in a vegetative state.

He said the victim, who was previously healthy, was reported to have suffered serious injuries on March 11 while at a military camp in Mersing, Johor.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the ministry is committed to ensuring that the case is handled transparently, fairly, and in accordance with the rule of law.

Khaled said appropriate action against the personnel involved will be determined based on the outcome of the investigation.

He also confirmed that the army had also carried out a parallel internal probe, with its findings to be submitted soon. - NST
