N Sembilan crisis: PKR leader wants Umno's sole Selangor exco sacked

A Selangor PKR leader has urged Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari to sack the state’s sole exco member from Umno, Rizam Ismail.

The call follows Umno's move to topple the PKR-led government in Negeri Sembilan.

"Umno's actions in the neighbouring state (Negeri Sembilan) have sparked unease and concern among PKR grassroots.

"Umno has already stabbed us in the back in Negeri Sembilan. I hope it does not recur in Selangor.

"For that, we need to consider Umno's position in the Selangor state government. If possible, replace the Umno representative in the state government with another leader," Selangor PKR election director Sathia Prakash Nadarajah told Malaysiakini.

Umno exco member in Selangor Rizam Ismail

Malaysiakini has contacted Rizam and the Menteri Besar’s Office and is awaiting their response.

Yesterday, all 14 Umno state assemblypersons withdrew support for Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.

The move was supported by five Perikatan Nasional assemblypersons who are ready to cooperate to form a government with BN.

The number is sufficient to form a new government with a simple majority of 19 seats. The Negeri Sembilan assembly has 36 seats.

Aminuddin said yesterday he had an audience with Negeri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, but was decreed to continue serving as usual until there is "final clarity".

Honeymoon tested

Sathia said precautionary measures must be taken to ensure stability in Selangor is not affected by the unexpected actions of coalition partners.

He said Amirudin must re-evaluate the cooperation, so the Negeri Sembilan scenario does not "infect" Selangor, a Pakatan Harapan stronghold.

In the 2023 state election, Harapan won 32 seats and Umno two seats. PN won 22 seats, thus breaking the two-thirds majority Harapan has held since 2008.

Selangor state assembly

Selangor has 56 state assembly seats.

Although Umno only won two seats through Rizam (Sungai Air Tawar) and Johan Abd Aziz (Dusun Tua), they were given trust in the state administration.

Rizam holds the rural development, traditional village sustainability, national unity, consumer affairs, and cooperatives portfolios.

Sathia said that although Harapan has a simple majority with 32 seats without Umno's support, Umno's presence in the state government was previously seen as symbolic of Madani government unity.

"However, with the latest tension in Negeri Sembilan, I believe the 'honeymoon' between the two parties is being tested in Selangor," he said. - Mkini
