Date, venue, time? Albert sends letter to press J-Kom chief on debate

Businessperson Albert Tei, identified by newly appointed Community Communications Department (J-Kom) director-general Hisyamuddin Ghazali as one of the key individuals allegedly slandering the Madani government, is now pressing the latter to honour his earlier commitment to a debate.

This morning, Tei (above, left) delivered a letter on the matter to the J-Kom office in Putrajaya, which was received by the department’s deputy director (strategic communications) Suwadi Guliling.

In the letter addressed to Hisyamuddin, the businessperson - who exposed the Sabah mining scandal - said he has yet to receive any updates on the proposed debate since June 13.

“I have not received any feedback from you regarding the details of the moderator, date, time, and location to organise the said debate event.

“Therefore, once again, I confirm my acceptance of the debate challenge proposed by you through this official letter,” he added.

Hisyamuddin had earlier proposed the debate after lodging a police report against Tei and former BN strategic communications deputy director Eric See-To, who has also agreed to face off with the J-Kom director-general.

“I would like to remind you that there were many journalists present on that day who witnessed and published how you extended the debate challenge to me,” said Tei in his letter.

“Because of that, I hope you will not disappoint the public who are eagerly anticipating our debate event,” he added.

Tei said that if Hisyamuddin decides not to proceed with the debate, he should issue a public apology within seven days.

Under fire for ‘Cina sesat’

The new J-Kom chief, who has hit the ground running, has also come under fire for using the term “Cina sesat” (misguided Chinese), which he later clarified was not racist and was only referring to both Tei and See-To.

Following this, Tei lodged reports with the police and the MCMC, claiming that Hisyamuddin’s remarks fell under the 3R category (race, religion and royalty).

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil also advised Hisyamuddin to exercise caution to prevent his statements from being misinterpreted or exploited by political rivals and others “intentionally looking to cause issues”.

“I told him that the energy and dynamism he has shown so far is good but, at the same time, he needs to be careful to ensure Malaysians understand what we are trying to convey,” he said. - Mkini
