DBKL justifies Setapak temple demolition

Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) today justified its action in demolishing the 50-year-old Perianna Muneswarar Hindu temple in Air Panas, Setapak.

The temple was razed in less than 20 minutes yesterday by DBKL workers.

In a statement issued today, DBKL said the "inactive" temple was razed as the land had been earmarked for a neighbourhood development project.

"The action was taken following the last reminder dated Feb 11 and a letter dated May 18, asking the temple caretakers to remove jasmine plants on the land. A period of seven days was given to them," the statement read.

DBKL had also issued four notices and held two dialogue sessions with the Setiawangsa MIC branch on the land issue before demolishing the temple.

"We have provided an alternative site for the temple, near Sekolah Menengah Tinggi, Setapak," the statement said.

DBKL also said the demolition process was carried out according to procedures to avoid any accidents.

Temple caretaker Kasiamma Perumal said yesterday DBKL officials dismissed a letter from Deputy Federal Territories Minister M Saravanan on the land issue.
