PCM vice-president Huan Cheng Guan said the party is geared up for the elections and gathering feedback from voters about whether they will support an independent entity.
For now, PCM has made a tentative plan to contest in 10 out of the 71 state seats but it may settle for five to six seats where its chances of winning are better, Huan said.
He said Malaysians are now willing to give the benefit of doubt to independent parties, as they are fed up with the politicking styles of Barisan Nasional (BN) or Pakatan Rakyat.
“Pakatan is still unable to decide on the seats allocation among the three parties, so what does that speak for their alliance except that they are only interested in political mileage rather than serving Sarawakians sincerely.
“If they are sincere, by now they would have made concessions and contested on a united Pakatan front,” said Huan, adding that many have now realised that it is just a political bloc formed to win seats but, are unable to govern effectively.
As for BN, he said the coalition has been around for a long time and this has perhaps made them complacent.
Seeking common symbol
PCM’s Sarawak chairman, four-term Ngemah assemblyman Gabriel Adit, hopes to crush the myth that only BN or Pakatan can survive politically in the state or Malaysia.
Nominations are fixed for April 6 while polling is April 16, and up for grabs are 71 state constituencies.
Sarawak’s longest serving Chief Minister, Taib Mahmud, has indicated that the 10th state elections could be the last one for him.
If the people support the party, PCM will raise their grievances without fear or favour since they are independent, said Huan.
On another matter, Huan hoped that the Election Commission would approve the party’s appeal for it to contest by using a common symbol.
“Our symbol resembles the 100-plus (drink) logo a bit but there are real differences as we do not want to controvene the Copyright Act.”
Huan said PCM would unveil major personalities in its list of candidates including a former parliamentarian. The areas they would contest are likely to be Iban-majority constituencies.
Stop sweeping comments on sex tape
In another development, Huan urged NGOs such as the Inter-Faith Council not to make sweeping statements about the purported Anwar Ibrahim sex tape unless they have seen it.
Huan said the holders of the tape should have also allowed Independent parties such as PCM to view the tape since the saying that “seeing is believing,” should be observed.
“Instead only Kita (another political party) was given an opportunity, Huan said. “I reserved more comment unless I see the content of the tape.”
Opposition leader Anwar is now embroiled in another sex scandal after he was twice accused of sodomy (an offence under Malaysian laws).
He was said to be the individual in a CCTV footage, which shows sexual acts performed with a woman, believed to be a sex worker. Anwar has denied he was the person in the tape and the matter is now under police investigation. - FMT
